CENTER FOR ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

MISSION

The Center for English as a Second Language prepares ESL students for success in an American university classroom, offers English language instruction for those needing greater English proficiency for personal or career-related purposes, and provides continued English language support for those international students currently enrolled at Brescia University.

GOALS

• To improve the students' English language and critical thinking skills in the major areas of speaking, listening, reading, writing, research, and test-taking.
• To familiarize the students with American culture and American universities' general academic standards, policies, and instructional strategies (such as group and peer work.)
• To familiarize the students with different styles of text found in an academic environment.
• To integrate the students in the program with the university and community and promote cross-cultural awareness.
• To foster a supportive learning environment in which the students feel comfortable communicating in English.
• To prepare the students to become active participants in improving their English language skills.
